Roots & Shoots Photography was started by Cheri Hudnut and Nikki Levine, two Berkeley-based professional photographers. They first met in music class where Cheri was her sons teacher, but talks quickly turned to photography. Cheri had just received her 6-year old's school pictures didn't look like her son at all! It was as if someone pinched him from behind, forcing him to smile.
How had this become the standard in school photography? School portraits could be much much better and they decided then and there that they were the ones to do it. No more fake smiles, bad backgrounds, or wallet-sized prints. Ok, maybe the wallet-sized prints could stay, but from now on not only would the pictures be something parents would want share (or even frame!) but they'd make sure
Picture Day would be fun for the kids. Its from this vision that
Roots & Shoots sprouted.
Cheri's passion for portraiture started in Los Angeles over ten years ago. She especially loves to photograph children and families and can be seen around town singing and dancing as a Music Together teacher. She is the proud mama of two fun energetic boys, Leif and Ian.
Nikki's actively looks for opportunities to share her enthusiasm for photography. (Most recently she founded a high school photography department.) Roots & Shoots gives her the opportunity to capture fleeting moments in children's lives. Her son, Lukas and twin girls, Mia and Sadie keep her inspired.
